Up-and-coming composer Rachel Elizabeth Matthews brings a modern twist to classical music. Her diverse work spans multiple genres, challenging traditional ideas of music from contemporary neo-Romantic to modern soundscapes. Since 2013, more than 20 of her original compositions have been premiered nationally, including The Pathless Woods: for Alto Saxophone, Violin, and Piano (2016), A World of Speculation: for String Quartet (2017), Haunt: for video and stereophonic playback (2018),and Lights and Smoke: for Wind Ensemble (2018).
Fresh yet familiar, Matthews’ compositions are unique in their sincere, beautiful expression of the human experience. Her works have been premiered nationally, notably at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia, where she has participated in annual compositional performances as well as “Perception: A Concert of New Music,” a concert showcase dedicated exclusively to her work. Most recently, her work Lights and Smoke for wind ensemble premiered at the North Central Conference of CBDNA by the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse Wind Ensemble. In addition to commissioning works privately, Matthews has participated in the Charlotte New Music Festival and the Fresh Inc. Festival in Chicago. She graduated magna cum laude with honors distinction from the University of Georgia in December 2016 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition and a Certificate in Music Business. She is now attending the University of Texas at Austin, pursuing a Master of Music degree in Music Composition.
She is an active member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the Society of Composers, the University of Texas Students Composers Association, the CLUTCH Composers Series, and the Professional Entertainment and Sports Association at the Terry College of Business.
A classically trained violinist since 1999, Matthews performs regularly with the University of Texas University Orchestra, the Wesley Foundation Worship Team, and as the second violinist for Quartetto Bellicoso. She has also performed with the UGA Symphony Orchestra, the Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, The Diverse Trio at the University of Georgia and Chamber Cartel.
